DC Comics is one of the largest and most popular American comic book publishers. Originally begun in 1934 as National Allied Publications, the company published a number of comic titles, including New Comics, Action Comics, which featured the character, Superman, in it's first issue, June 1938, and the popular Detective Comics, from which DC took it's name. Detective Comics was an anthology, featuring several different stories in one issue, and introduced The Batman character in May, 1939. Since 1969, DC Comics has been a subsidiary of Warner Brothers Entertainment.
Of the storylines developed by DC Comics, one of the most enduring is the Justice League. The League has been made up of various DC superheroes over the years, but the original lineup is still the most popular. Founding members of the Justice League included Superman, Batman, Wonderwoman, Flash, The Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter. Various television series and movies, both animated and live action, have featured the Justice League.
The success of recent Superman, and the phenomenally successful Batman movies, have geared the company up to release more live action films featuring DC heroes. Currently, movies are either planned or already in production for such DC Comics titles as: The Green Lantern (2010), Jonah Hex (2010), Wonder Woman (2011), new entries in both the Batman and Superman series (2010), and Justice League (2012).
